1. Greenhouse Gases Emissions Intensity (GEI) Target Rules 2025

On April 16, 2025, the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change issued notice of the Greenhouse Gases Emissions Intensity (GEI) Target Rules, 2025. The Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS), which supports India's obligations under the Paris Climate Agreement, has a compliance mechanism established by the Rules.

In addition to outlining gradual reduction targets for 2025–2026 and 2026–2027, the draft rules establish baseline emissions for 2023–2024. For industries including aluminium, cement, pulp and paper, and chlor-alkali, specific goals have been set. Major corporations like Vedanta and Ultratech are among the 282 industrial units that are impacted.

2. Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme of India (GHCI)

With the introduction of the Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme of India (GHCI), India just made a step forward in its transition to sustainable energy dubbed Green Hydrogen which is produced using renewable energy sources. The plan will establish a transparent certification mechanism for green hydrogen generation, increasing market trust and transparency.

Every Indian producer of green hydrogen, with the exception of those who only produce for export, is required to go through a certification process. Certification guarantees that only sustainable energy sources are used to manufacture hydrogen. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency's (BEE) Accredited Carbon Verification (ACV) Agencies will perform the certification. Green hydrogen certificates will be traded assets inside the carbon trading ecosystem starting in 2026, following the opening of India's carbon market.

3. GANHRI Downgrades NHRC From A To B Status

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India was recently recommended to be demoted from the "A" to the "B" status by the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI). The SCA pointed out that although the NHRC has taken some action, systematic abuses have not been adequately addressed.

4. Sachet App For Improved Disaster Preparedness In India

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) introduced the Sachet smartphone application with the goal of enhancing India's readiness for disasters. It was recently brought up by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his "Mann ki Baat" speech. The Sachet app is made to provide geotagged warnings concerning different disasters in real-time.

IBM's iconic building will be part of the Quantum Computing Village. Advanced quantum systems and a specialised data centre for high-performance computing will be housed in this structure. The completion of infrastructure standards will require cooperation with leading companies in the sector, such as Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and L&T. In order to advance India's capacity for quantum computing, the project intends to assist the IBM Quantum System Two.

9. India’s Longest Rail Tunnel At Janasu In Uttarakhand

India's Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw declared on April 16, 2025, that the nation's longest train tunnel had been completed at Janasu in Uttarakhand. The Rishikesh-Karnaprayag Broad Gauge Rail Link Project includes this milestone. A crucial stage in tunnel building is a tunnel breakthrough, which occurs when two tunnel ends that are being dug meet. The 172nd anniversary of India's first railway service fell on the same day as the breakthrough.

Eighty-three percent (104 km) of the 125 km Rishikesh-Karnaprayag project is made up of tunnels. The twin tunnel, Tunnel No. 8, is 14.57 km long, and the second tube is anticipated to be finished by July 2025. By connecting important cities in Uttarakhand, this ambitious project hopes to improve accessibility and communication throughout the area.

10. Mission Anveshan To Enhance India’s Energy Security

Mission Anveshan may be extended by the Central Government. Seismic surveys are encouraged under this program to map oil and gas resources. The initiative was started in fiscal year 2025 with the goal of finding additional reserves to increase energy security. The program may last until fiscal year 2027, but it is scheduled to end in fiscal year 2026.

Over 2 years, spanning the fiscal years 2025 and 2026, Rs 720 crore was allotted to the initiative. Its main objective is to carry out 2D seismic surveys in seven onshore sedimentary basins spanning 20,275 line kilometres. Ganga-Punjab, Rajasthan, Saurashtra, the Deccan Syncline, Cuddapah, Krishna-Godavari, and Chhattisgarh are some of these basins.
