1. Indian Army Acquires Russian Igla-S Missiles

The operational readiness of the Indian Army depends on the new Igla-S missile deliveries. To combat threats from enemy drones and planes, they are positioned in forward formations. To improve its air defence capabilities, the Indian Army has also started a tender for more launchers and missiles.

A man-portable surface-to-air missile system is the Igla-S. It tracks and engages airborne targets using infrared homing technology. The heat that the target's engine emits is what the missile locks onto. It works well against drones and other small, swift threats. The Igla-S can engage targets up to 6 km away and 3.5 km above the ground. Compared to previous iterations, this advanced model provides better resistance to countermeasures.

2. New Genome-Edited Rice Varieties: Kamala & Pusa DST Rice

Two genome-edited rice cultivars have been developed in India as a result of recent developments in agricultural biotechnology. These cultivars, "Kamala" and "Pusa DST Rice 1," were introduced by the Union Agriculture Minister and are expected to provide higher yields and be more resilient to climate change. These varieties, which were created using CRISPR-Cas technology, mark a new chapter in sustainable farming.

The two novel rice cultivars, "Kamala" and "Pusa DST Rice 1," were created to solve certain farming issues. "Pusa DST Rice 1" improves resistance to salt and drought, whereas "Kamala" increases grain production by targeting the Gn1a gene. When compared to their parent lines, both kinds have seen increases in yield.

3. Election Commission of India To Launch ECINET Digital Platform

ECINET, a comprehensive digital platform, is scheduled to be launched by the Election Commission of India (ECI). The goal of this project is to create a single interface for more than 40 current web and mobile applications. A digital platform called ECINET was created to combine different electoral software. Apps with a combined download count of over 5.5 crore, including Voter Helpline, Voter Turnout, and cVIGIL, are consolidated on the platform. It seeks to simplify the process of downloading and logging into several apps.

A smooth user experience will be offered by ECINET. Users will be able to obtain all electoral services from one location thanks to it. Voters and authorities who currently manage several applications will find this less taxing. The platform is accessible to a larger audience because to its aesthetically pleasing layout and user-friendly design.

4. NITI Aayog’s ‘Enhancing MSMEs Competitiveness in India’ Report

A report titled "Enhancing MSMEs Competitiveness in India" was recently released by the NITI Aayog. It describes methods to unleash the potential of Micro, Small, and Medium-Sized Enterprises (MSMEs) in India and was created in partnership with the Institute for Competitiveness. The report highlights possibilities and problems unique to the sector. Its focus areas consist of:

  • Textiles & Apparel
  • Chemical Products
  • Food Processing
  • Automotive

At the state level, the paper suggests an adaptable and cluster-based policy strategy. It highlights the necessity of more stakeholder engagement, better data integration, and regular monitoring. It is also advised to increase support through collaborations with logistics companies and training in digital marketing.

5. 5-Feet Long Inscription From Vikramaditya I Era

Madapura Lake, located in Nyamati taluk, Davangere district, was the site of a recent archaeological discovery. They discovered an inscription from the 7th century AD. This five-foot-long inscription is composed of seventeen lines written in Old Kannada script. Vikramaditya I of the Badami Chalukya dynasty, who ruled from 654 to 681 AD, is credited with its establishment.

An administrative deed of Singhavenna, an officer under Vikramaditya I, is revealed in the inscription. It documents the local villagers' tax exemptions, signifying social programs. It also mentions a six-acre land contribution for the creation of a lake, illustrating early communal organisation and landholding practices. According to the inscription, Ballavi was an administrative entity that included about 70 settlements. This illustrates how well-functioning the local government was in the seventh century AD.

6. UP Enables Night Landings For Fighter Jets On An Expressway

In a historic move, Uttar Pradesh became the first Indian state to allow fighter planes to land on a motorway at night. The Indian Air Force (IAF) celebrated this accomplishment by testing a recently built 3.5-kilometre airfield in Shahjahanpur along the Ganga Motorway. After the Agra-Lucknow, Purvanchal, and Bundelkhand motorways, the Ganga Motorway is the fourth motorway in Uttar Pradesh to have an airstrip. It is notable, nevertheless, as the first that can land at night.

An important component of India's defensive infrastructure is the Ganga Motorway airstrip. It is intended to make fighter aircraft landings easier at night as well as during the day. The airstrip improves India's capacity to react quickly and efficiently to threats. It displays the nation's strategic military prowess and provides the IAF with an alternate runway in times of emergency or conflict.

7. PM Modi Inaugurates Vizhinjam International Seaport In Kerala

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's opening of the Vizhinjam International Seaport places Kerala on the international maritime scene. The purpose of this deep-water port is to increase India's involvement in global trade. The port, which was created through a public-private collaboration between Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd, is an example of infrastructure investment in India.

A significant international shipping route is only ten nautical miles away from Vizhinjam. It is expected to regain some of the transhipment trade from India that Colombo Port in Sri Lanka has previously handled. It is anticipated that this reform will increase revenue and save India a significant amount of foreign money.

8. 2024 As India’s Record-Breaking Warm Year

According to a recent analysis by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), 2024 was the warmest year on record for India. The anomaly in the average surface temperature was +0.65°C higher than the long-term norm. There are worries, meanwhile, that the real warming might have gone beyond the crucial 1°C mark.

The effects of climate change are apparent regardless of the method used to quantify warming. Nearly 88% of India was affected by extreme weather events in 2024, which occurred 322 days a year. This represents a concerning trend as it is higher than in prior years. In 2024, extreme weather events were responsible for 3,472 fatalities, indicating a significant human cost.

9. SC Clarifies Digital Access As A Fundamental Right In India

Digital access was recently acknowledged by the Indian Supreme Court as a basic right guaranteed by Article 21 of the Constitution. The state is required to offer an inclusive digital ecosystem as a result of this historic ruling. Digital access is essential to the right to life and liberty, according to the Supreme Court's ruling.

The government received twenty directions from the Supreme Court. The goals of these directives are to improve digital accessibility and KYC procedures. The court directed regulatory bodies to follow accessibility guidelines and guarantee that all digital platforms are inclusively constructed. The decision upheld the state's responsibilities under several Constitutional articles -

  • Article 21: The right to a dignified existence
  • Article 15: Protection from Discrimination Article 14: Right to Equality
  • Article 38: The obligation of the state to advance welfare and lessen inequality

10. ITER Aims To Test Nuclear Fusion As A Viable Energy Source

The International Thermo-nuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), which is situated in Southern France, unites more than 30 nations, including India, to construct the largest tokamak in the world. The goal of this magnetic fusion device is to mimic the Sun's fusion processes. ITER recently completed its sophisticated pulsed superconducting electromagnet system, marking a significant milestone. This mechanism is essential to the reactor's functioning because it permits the fusion process, which has the potential to completely transform the energy production industry.

The ITER reactor is shaped like a tokamak, which is a toroidal or doughnut-shaped device. The fourth state of matter, plasma, can be contained because of this design. A sophisticated network of superconducting magnets that produce strong magnetic fields makes up the reactor's core. The high-temperature plasma required for fusion is contained and managed by these fields.
